After graduating, Rex entered the radio business. After paying his dues, he landed a gig as a DJ for N75 FM, a Neo Nightdyne radio station. While there, he met the station's shock jock, Mia Stevenson, and immediately, the two fell in love. All was well at N75, as the two became a citywide hit duo. Then suddenly, the station was attacked by the extremist religious faction, New Genesis, over "offensive material". N75 staff were severely injured, including Rex and Mia. Sadly, Mia did not survive the ordeal. Losing his love, Rex was crushed...until it was reported that the head of that New Genesis attack - the person who killed Mia, was none other than his brother, Preston, now known as "Priest Pendragon". This led Rex to Arctica Academy, a super-training school, to fine-tune the power he never wanted to use again. After completion, he was approached by Nick to join Second Generation. Rex readily accepted, vowing to prevent more disasters, and ultimately, avenge Mia's death.

Rex Pendragon possesses the ability to drain superpowers from another superpowered being and use them as his own. However, he can only store one power at a time. Victims of the power drain remain powerless until Rex drains another, which purges their power from his body and returns it to them. As each drain takes a considerable amount of energy to perform, Rex never drains in rapid succession, preferring to wait at least 5 minutes in between each drain. His stay at Arctica Academy revealed that he is also capable of temporarily granting the powers he's drained to anyone he wishes through instant transmission. Recipients of the Rex's transmission keep the powers for about 90 seconds before losing them. Also, upon joining Second Generation, Rex was given custom gloves made of rare (and obscenely expensive) negativa - the only material on the planet which superpowers have zero effect on, to nullify his draining powers when worn.
